Over the past 40 years, Vijay has worked with governments, public sector agencies and civil society to strengthen engagement with institutions and policy making. He started as an advice worker in Brixton, helping community-based organisations navigate the land use planning system. Following a stint at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations in the 1990s focussed on environmental action, he moved to the Caribbean where for a decade he focussed on participatory natural resource management. He then joined the directorate of the Commonwealth Foundation where he advocated for diversity and inclusion in development processes. Vijay has considerable experience as a leader and facilitator. He has undertaken workplace investigations for public sector organisations and has a particular interest in the use of strategic reviews as means of strengthening institutions. In 2022 he was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award, from the Kaleidoscope Trust. This was made in recognition of a “lifetime contribution to upholding the human rights of LGBT+ people.”
