Overview

Over 40 years’ proven experience in the not-for-profit sector. My skills include business and strategic planning, organisational development, people management and development, and the implementation of governance-related documents/policies to help organisations operate more efficiently. Areas of expertise include:

Review of governance documents for many small charities, including constitutions, roles and job descriptions of trustees, and governance-related policies.

Strategic and business planning for many organisations - I recently (September 2019) supported a health-related charity to develop a 3-year business plan. I provided support to 12 early years settings with business plans for capital funding projects. During 2017–2018, I supported an early years setting in creating a business plan for local authority approval for a move to a new building.

Income strategy – I supported a national charity to implement a strategy that now generates 50% of its income and supported several early years settings to maximise their self-generating income.

Collaboration and mergers – As a non-executive director serving on social housing boards as well as in my business consultancy, I have worked on mergers and collaborations, carrying out due diligence, testing, negotiations and reviewing contracts. I recently helped a health-related charity to develop a merger strategy and find a partner.

Clients

My main clients are small charities (some clients example shown above). Also, I have provided my services to London Borough of Islington where I was contracted for more than three years to provide bespoke business support to early years setting. I have also offered my service to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and to a voluntary infrastructure organisation.

Qualifications

Post Graduate Qualification – Diploma in Management Studies

Experience

My special interests are organisation review business and strategic planning, project management and evaluations, working with trustees on strengthening the roles of governance, developing policies and procedures.

Some example of my recent work:

  1. I advised a charity in east London on creating a new business plan with a revised vision and mission statement and a funding income strategy and helped to recruit new trustees to strengthen its governance structure. I also provided support in setting up as a social enterprise to generate income for the charity.
  2. I supported a charity working with victims of domestic and sexual violence to set up as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, overseeing the whole process and getting the registration approved by the Charity Commission within three weeks of making the application.
  3. I supported an early years setting that was facing closure due to poor building conditions to move to new premises, for which the local authority wanted a viable business plan with financial projections to show that the business was sustainable. I helped the setting to formulate the business plan with a 3-year financial projection and to present it to the local authority, which subsequently accepted it as realistic and prudent. A year after moving to the new building, the nursery showed a surplus in its financial statements (2018–2019), whereas in the previous three years it was dependent on its high reserve funds to stay in operation. It is now projecting to make a surplus in future years.

Other
I have sat on a number of boards for not-for-profit organisations, including chair, board member and non-executive board member. Organisations include Newlon Housing Trust, Coroners’ Court Support Services, Adab Trust, Whipps Cross University Hospital (NHS) Trust, Gateway Housing Association and the Prince’s Trust Business Committee (London).
